Foreign trade operations carry a wide range of risks, but when it comes to sensitive cargo, some very specific risks deserve attention: the product can arrive on time and still arrive unusable. A temperature fluctuation, inadequate packaging or an incorrect or incomplete document can all result in losses.<\/p>\n

That is why, when we talk about chemicals, food and pharmaceuticals, the operation requires full compliance, where every step must be planned, documented and monitored.<\/p>\n

What makes cargo “sensitive”<\/h2>\n

Cargo is sensitive when its integrity depends on controlled conditions or when its handling involves regulatory, sanitary or safety risk. Three sectors account for most of these operations:<\/p>\n

Chemicals:<\/strong> many are classified as dangerous goods and follow specific international standards for packaging, labeling and transport (IMDG for sea freight, IATA DGR for air freight). Some also require licenses from Brazilian authorities such as the Federal Police or the Army.<\/p>\n

Food:<\/strong> may require temperature and humidity control, as well as attention to shelf life, and are regulated and controlled by agencies such as MAPA (Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture) or Anvisa (Brazil’s Health Regulatory Agency), depending on the product.<\/p>\n

Pharmaceuticals:<\/strong> in some cases, they combine the strictest requirements: temperature control, traceability and good practices defined by Anvisa throughout the entire supply chain.<\/p>\n

Where operations usually fail<\/h2>\n

Most losses with sensitive cargo do not happen on the main leg of the journey, but in the transitions: waiting for customs clearance, regulatory requirements, proper handling.<\/p>\n

Another critical point is documentation. Outdated safety data sheets, import licenses issued late or discrepancies in tariff classification can hold cargo at the port, and, in the case of perishable or thermolabile products, every day of detention shortens the product’s shelf life.<\/p>\n

Handling sensitive cargo safely rests on three pillars:<\/p>\n

Early regulatory planning:<\/strong> mapping licenses, approvals and requirements in the country of origin and in Brazil before the purchase is even made, not afterwards.<\/p>\n

Control of conditions along the entire route:<\/strong> qualified packaging, temperature and humidity monitoring, and logistics partners prepared for the type of cargo.<\/p>\n

Documentary traceability:<\/strong> records proving that the product was kept under adequate conditions from start to finish, something increasingly demanded by regulators and audits.<\/p>\n
